Syrian Emergency Relief Update

The Government of Canada has extended the deadline for matching funds for eligible donations to Canadian agencies working to provide relief to Syrians displaced within Syria and living as refugees in the surrounding countries to February 29, 2016.

Funds raised will provide assistance to help met the basic humanitarian needs of people affected by the conflict of Syria, including shelter, food, health care and water and will also provide protection and education for conflict-affected people in Syria and millions of refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

PWRDF continues to respond to the needs of displaced Syrians through the ACT Alliance and the Canadian Woodgrains Bank, as well as through its long-time partner Refuge Egypt in Cairo. The ACT Alliance appeal for 2016 is a continuation of its 20156 appeal and PWRDF has approved CAD $300,000 from designated donations for the 2016 appeal.

Looking forward to Bishop Melissa’s visit to St. Alban’s on January 24, 2016!

Bishop Melissa

In November of 2013, Bishop Skelton became the first woman and the first American to be elected Bishop of the 135 year old Anglican Diocese of New Westminster. During her years in graduate school, Bishop Melissa earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Masters Degree in Divinity, preparing and studying for both degrees at the same time. Prior to ordination she was a Brand Manager at Procter and Gamble the American personal products corporation thus distinguishing her as the first Bishop of the Diocese of New Westminster to have had a career outside of the church prior to ordination. On March 1, 2014, she was ordained Bishop at the Vancouver Convention Centre and then later that day at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver she was installed as the 9th Bishop of the Diocese of New Westminster. Since her ordination she has been going at a non-stop pace getting to know the communities of faith that make up her diocese. Bishop Melissa Skelton is a respected leader in the field of Congregational Development leading workshops and learning sessions throughout North America. The congregation tripled during her 9 year incumbency at her last ministry post, St.Paul’s Episcopal Church in one of Seattle’s urban neighbourhoods.

Bishop Skelton leads an extremely busy life in ministry. On August 15, 2015, Bishop Melissa married the Reverend Eric Stroo, a vocational deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia who is a counselor in the Seattle area. Bishop Melissa has three siblings: a brother in San Francisco and two sisters in Atlanta, GA. She has an adult son, Evan who until recently lived with his wife and two children in Washington, DC.
